Robotic Bariatric and Gastric Surgery

Bariatric and Gastric Surgery is performed to achieve weight loss in morbidly obese individuals who have failed conventional methods of diet and exercise. There are different types of bariatric surgery, but it generally involves reducing the size of the stomach and bypassing a part of the intestine which results in early satiety and malabsorption. These surgeries may now be performed using robotic technology which enables your doctor to use minimally invasive methods while improving dexterity and precision.

Robotic surgery is performed using advanced imaging systems that give a magnified 3-dimensional view of the operating site. A few small incisions are made through which imaging and surgical instruments are inserted and controlled by robotic arms. Your doctor views the operative site and controls the robotic arms from a console near the operating table. The robotic arms are highly manoeuvrable and enable very precise movements.

Robotic technology allows bariatric surgery to be performed in individuals with a greater body mass index than possible by conventional surgery. Operating time, postoperative pain, scarring, recovery time and the risk of complications are significantly reduced.
